All praise is due to Allah, and may exaltation and safety be granted to Muhammad, his family, his companions, and those who aid them. To proceed:

[Fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah]

In Zaad al-Mustaqn’i by Shaykh Moosaa al-Hajjaawee [d. 968 A.H.], may Allah have mercy him, it says: “And fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah is recommended…” (1)

On the authority of Abu Qataadah al-Ansaaree [d. 54 A.H.], may Allah be pleased with him:

…The Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace upon him, was asked about fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah. So, he, prayers and peace upon him, said: ‘Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah is an expiation of last year’s and next year’s sins.’ [Collected by Muslim, #1162]

b.) Having something undesirable lifted; The reward for fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah is of the second type (i.e. having something undesirable lifted) due to the statement of the Messenger of Allah: ‘Fasting the day of ‘Arafah is an expiation of last year’s sins.’
